One thing I must mention is the smell ! WOW ! As soon as the wood is cut or split there is a huge rush of pine smell which hits you in the face. Some parts of the wood look like solid resin (like wax), whereas other bits are more woody ! Parts of the wood are definitely more resin soaked that other bits. Then I cut and split the wood to see what was inside: I used a wire brush to knock all the rubbish off the wood, once it had dried out. I bundled them into a plastic bag and bought them home to dry out. I collected a few stumps but they were all caked in muck and were soaked. I’ve read/seen a bit online (of course), but I’ve lacked any hands on experience.įatwood is resin impregnated wood from pine trees often it occurs at the base and roots of pine trees, and in shoulder joints (where branches shoot from the main trunk).įatwood is much prized in the northern hemisphere as a waterproof tinder and kindling material it can catch a spark from a ferrocerium rod and produce a flame. I’ve wanted to play with some fatwood for ages, but haven’t had opportunity to collect any until now. I was easily able to uproot the stumps by hand, most of the “wood” was completely rotten and disintegrated, but the core section of the stumps was still quite heavy, hard and firm. Obligingly I offered to remove some of the stumps at no cost to the owner ! I was able to visit a property with some pine trees up the back where I noticed some old stumps which had been sitting in the ground for years.
